Weekly Home Time: Questions CDL-A Drivers Should Ask Before Joining a Carrier

“Weekly home time” can mean different things at different carriers. For one driver it may mean a predictable weekend reset at home. For another it may mean a shorter break that changes from week to week. Before accepting a CDL-A position, a driver should ask enough questions to understand how the promise works in daily operations.
Start with the route. Ask where freight normally originates, which states the truck regularly serves, and whether the lane is consistent or changes often. A repeat network makes it easier to estimate travel time and plan a return. Expedite Transportation’s primary routes connect Minnesota with Montana, Oregon, and Washington, so applicants can evaluate the actual geography instead of relying on a general description such as “regional.”
Next, ask how dispatch plans the return trip. Is home time built into the load plan? What happens when an appointment changes or weather slows the route? Clear answers show whether home time is treated as an operational commitment or only as a recruiting phrase. Drivers should also ask when they are expected back on duty and whether the schedule changes during holidays or unusually busy periods.
Freight type affects the schedule too. Drop-and-hook work can reduce loading delays, while live loading and unloading may add uncertainty. No operation can eliminate every delay, but the carrier should be able to explain its normal freight mix, common waiting points, and how dispatch communicates when the plan changes.
Finally, compare the schedule with the rest of the job: equipment, mileage expectations, pay structure, safety standards, and communication. Reliable home time is strongest when the entire operation supports it. A good conversation before hiring helps the driver and carrier decide whether the route is a practical long-term fit.
