Wyoming Gets $6.66 Million for I-80 Tunnels

Two tunnels on Interstate 80 are getting safety upgrades.

On October 21, 2026, the Wyoming Department of Transportation announced a $6.659 million federal grant for improvements to the Green River tunnels.

The project comes after a serious crash in February 2025.

Both tunnels will receive improvements, including concrete repairs, better lighting, fire suppression systems, and new electronic road signs.

The new equipment will include variable speed limit signs and message boards to warn drivers about road conditions.

Design work is already underway.

The funding must be obligated by September 30, 2027. WYDOT has not announced a construction start date.

### What This Means for CDL Drivers

I-80 is a major route for truck drivers crossing Wyoming.

The improvements should make the tunnels safer and help drivers receive earlier warnings about dangerous conditions.
